Making a Difference One Garden Bed at a Time

News

The sky opened up and rain poured down, but that didn’t stop Campbell’s Corporate Leadership Team, including President and CEO Denise Morrison, from volunteering to build raised garden beds at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Camden, NJ, as part of the company’s annual service week.

Mother Nature moved the project indoors where the 20-person team swiftly built five, 4×8 raised beds which will be placed in the garden area, filled with dirt and planted with seasonal vegetables.  The vegetables grown will be distributed through the Kroc Center’s Food Pantry, which serves 250 people a month.

“The work of the volunteers was extraordinary,” said Ben Ovadia, Development Manager – Salvation Army Kroc Center.  “Their elbow grease and know-how is allowing us to expand our food pantry and provide in-demand produce items such as peas and hearty greens to our clients in need.”

The volunteer effort was just one of many that have taken place with the Kroc Center since opening its doors in October 2014.  Campbell was an initial supporter of the Kroc, providing a $500,000 donation in 2012 to sponsor its Campbell Healthy Community Kitchen, which provides meals to an estimated 350,000 visitors annually.

In addition, Campbell Chefs and Culinary Team have adopted the Kroc Center, providing training for foodservice staff, cooking demos and nutrition education lessons for clients and even serving community holiday meals to Kroc members and their families.  It is all part of Campbell’s commitment to make a lasting impact that matters on the lives of residents in the communities where we live and work.
