“Look at the smiles on their faces,” said William Johnson, Safety Monitor and volunteer at New Visions Homeless Day Shelter in Camden, N.J. “Our clients really appreciate someone taking the time to cook them a hot meal. That is something they do not receive often.”
Making breakfast at New Visions is one of more than 70 events where Campbell employees are volunteering during Make a Difference Week, the company’s annual week of volunteer service. While more than 3,700 employees are participating across the country, 90% of Campbell’s World Headquarters employees are dedicating their time to helping their local community thrive in the company’s hometown of Camden, NJ.
Teams have cooked breakfast and lunch at the Ronald McDonald House, New Visions, Cathedral Kitchen, Salvation Army and more. They have also renovated homes to ready them for new Camden homeowners with Habitat for Humanity and St. Joseph’s Carpenter Society. In addition, many employees took to the Cooper River to clean up the river bank to make it safe for aquatic life with South Jersey Land and Water Trust.
“It was a great day. It is always fun to get out there with your teammates and help clean up the community of Camden,” said Ed Boyle, Manager – Procurement at Campbell. “It gives you a sense of pride to contribute and to give back.”
Our Integrated Global Services team cleaned up 10th Street Park in Camden so young girls from the ages of 9 to 18 will have a chance to play softball on a once dilapidated field.
“Campbell employees are renovating our softball field which has been unusable for quite some time. They are also replacing dangerous bleachers so not only can our girls play together, 200 strong, but also be watched by family and friends. It will really help bring a sense of community back to this park,” commented Josie Rodriguez, Manager of the Camden Division of the Camden Little League.
Other employees worked to bring fresh produce to Camden residents. One group worked with Camden’s Promise Elementary School and the NJ Tree Foundation to create a learning garden full of raised vegetable garden beds and brand new trees. At the Cathedral Kitchen, roof top garden beds were planted with lettuce and herb plants which will be harvested and used in their daily meal service program for food insecure Camden residents. And one team even took to the farm, gleaning 33 bags of collard greens for donation, which would have otherwise been turned underground.
