Just Peachy, Giving “Seconds” A Second Life

Nutrition

You give it a quick glance in the grocery store, but hastily toss it aside.  It is too small, lacks color or has a slight blemish.  It is the quest for the perfect piece of produce.  And this is one reason why more than 30% of food grown in the United States is sent to landfill.

Enter Just Peachy salsa, a shelf-stable peach salsa which is made by Campbell and sold at retail by the Food Bank of South Jersey, with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the salsa going to support people in Southern NJ who are food insecure.

The salsa recipe was developed by Campbell’s culinary team and uses fresh peaches, diverting 75,000 pounds of peaches from landfill.  With the support of ingredient and packaging donations from nine Campbell suppliers and the volunteer efforts of nearly 100 Campbell employees who produce, box and palletize the salsa, Just Peachy has been helping feed families in Southern NJ for the past five years.

So, what does this small, but mighty jar do for our community?

How about provide $300,000 in revenue for the Food Bank of South Jersey over the past few years, which allowed them to provide 500,000 meals to food insecure families in the Southern NJ region. Not too bad for a few “second” peaches saved from landfill.

The fifth year of production included a 48,000 jar run of the 16oz. salsa which will be sold across 74 retail outlets including farmers’ markets, ShopRite stores and specialty food stores across Southern New Jersey.
