Hunger Action Month: Supporting our community food banks

Community

September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide movement spearheaded by Feeding America, to spread awareness about hunger. This year, Feeding America estimates that more than 54 million people could face hunger in the wake of the pandemic.

We’re committed to continuing our partnerships with organizations dedicated to fighting food insecurity, and we’ve donated $6 million in food and funds to over 30 feeding programs to support their pandemic relief efforts.

Throughout the month, we encourage everyone across North America to take action against hunger by sharing, volunteering, pledging to advocate, fundraising and donating to this critical work.

Here, four food banks we’re proud to support share the devastating impact of the pandemic and ways you can help.

Cache Food Pantry in Logan, Utah

The Cache Food Pantry is a community partnership located near one of our Campbell Snacks plants in Cache County, Utah. Their goal is to ensure that no individual in their community goes to bed hungry by providing assistance to an average of 650 families each month.

The pandemic presented the food pantry with new challenges, losing their two largest food drives due to the health crisis while facing an increase in need.

In Cache County and looking to help this Hunger Action Month? The Cache Food Pantry gladly accepts food donations, including their “Grow and Gather” option for donating fresh fruits and vegetables, and pantry staples like cooking oils, sugar and flour.

Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto, Canada

In our Campbell’s Canada community of Toronto is the Daily Bread Food Bank, which works toward ending hunger and poverty by running programs to support those experiencing food insecurity across 130 member agencies and 170 food programs.

Since March, Daily Bread has distributed 6.7 million pounds of food, an increase of 45% from last year due to the pandemic. The organization adapted to the new environment by partnering with Global Medic to install a field hospital tent in its parking lot. Using a conveyor belt, they transfer food-filled hampers from its warehouse to the tent for client pick up, allowing for safer social distancing.

“We feel fortunate for the generosity of our community members to ensure uninterrupted service to our neighbors in need, however, food and monetary donations will allow us to continue to serve our community in the weeks and months to come, as the economic impacts of COVID-19 continue to be felt,” said Andrew Manson of Daily Bread.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina

Headquartered in the Charlotte community near one of our Campbell Snacks hubs, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina serves 24 counties in North and South Carolina. The food bank distributes food and household items to over 800 hunger feeding agencies that include emergency pantries, soup kitchens, senior programs, shelters and low-income daycares.

Since the pandemic began in mid-March, Second Harvest distributed over 10 million more food products and 7 million more pounds of fresh produce, meat and dairy than the same time frame last year.

Due to limited volunteer groups and social distancing requirements, the food bank adapted to bringing staff together twice a week for full days of packing relief boxes.

The organization’s number one goal is to end childhood hunger, and there are many ways you can help support them in their mission by donating food, time, and funds.

The Food Bank of South Jersey

The Food Bank of South Jersey was founded in Camden, New Jersey, the hometown of our headquarters.

In the first 150 days of the pandemic response, the Food Bank of South Jersey provided over 7.5 million meals to food-insecure South Jersey residents in 58 communities across 4 counties. Nearly 45,000 boxes filled with nutritious foods were distributed through a newly implemented, low-to-no-contact delivery model.

“Continued financial support is most needed for us to address increased demand,” said Lavinia Awosanya, Chief Development Officer at the Food Bank of South Jersey.
