Chicken Soup: Just What the Doctor Ordered To Improve Hydration When You Have a Cold

Press Releases

CAMDEN, N.J., Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ — A new survey of family physicians
confirms what moms have known all along — eating chicken soup can help manage
the misery of cold symptoms. In a survey of family physicians who are members
of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), 87 percent agreed that it
is important for people to increase fluid intake when they have a cold. Two
out of three doctors who recommend increasing fluids, agree that eating
commercially prepared soup, such as Campbell’s(R) Chicken Noodle Soup, is an
effective way to improve hydration when experiencing cold symptoms.

“Like many physicians, I recommend that both children and adults get
proper rest and nutrition and increase their fluid intake to stay hydrated
when they are sick,” says Leah Raye Mabry, MD, RPh, a family physician from
Pleasanton, Texas and a member of the AAFP Foundation’s Nutrition Spokesperson
Team. “Increasing fluids helps to keep nasal passages moist, prevent
dehydration and soothe an irritated throat. Chicken soup is a great choice
for warmth and nourishment as well as hydration,” added Dr. Mabry. In the
survey, chicken soup was second only to water as the fluid most frequently
mentioned by doctors as a good way to improve hydration during a cold.

The survey findings reaffirm the use of chicken soup as a way to ease cold
symptoms. Chicken soup sparked scientific interest two years ago, when a
study was published in the medical journal CHEST, which indicated that chicken
soup had potential anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory studies. The
research, conducted by Stephen Rennard, M.D. and his colleagues at the
University of Nebraska, concluded that chicken soup may contain a number of
substances which functions as an anti-inflammatory mechanism that potentially
could ease the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections.

Some of the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, such as
congestion, stuffy nose, cough and sore throat, were the top four complaints
most frequently reported by doctors in the new survey.

Mothers and grandmothers have counted on chicken soup for years as a warm
and soothing way to help nurse their loved ones back to health. “Chicken soup
has a strong emotional connection, it evokes memories of the ways our mothers
cared for us when we were young,” says Kimberlee Burrows, Associate Marketing
Manager for Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup. “Now doctors’ advice mirrors what
our moms have been doing all along.”

About Family Physicians

Family physicians, like other medical specialists, complete an extensive
three-year residency program in the specialty after graduating from medical
school. As part of their residency, family physicians receive training in six
major medical areas: pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, internal
medicine, psychiatry and neurology, surgery and community medicine. They also
receive instruction in many areas including geriatrics, emergency medicine,
ophthalmology, radiology, nutrition, orthopedics, otolaryngology and urology.
As a result, family physicians are the only specialists qualified to treat
most ailments, and to provide comprehensive health care for people of all
ages. Most family physicians are members of the AAFP. For AAFP tips on
