CAMDEN, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nov. 6, 2002–America’s home cooks
reserve a prominent place on their holiday tables year after year for
the time-honored classic – Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole. In fact,
this “souper” side dish featuring Campbell’s(R) condensed Cream of
Mushroom soup takes its place alongside the turkey in more than 20
million homes each holiday season.

Green Bean Casserole Receives National Recognition

This year, the Green Bean Casserole is being celebrated in a
different way. After its creation nearly 50 years ago in Campbell’s
Kitchen, the recipe is recognized as a significant piece of Americana.
Heralded as a prized invention for its enduring contribution to the
holiday meal, the original casserole recipe will be donated to the
archives of the Akron, Ohio-based National Inventors Hall of Fame(R)
(NIHF), and will be presented by the inventor herself, Dorcas Reilly,
former manager of Campbell’s Kitchen.

“The National Inventors Hall of Fame was created to recognize and
celebrate invention in America and its heritage as a nation of
innovators. We are always pleased to draw attention to everyday
inventors, like Dorcas Reilly, who have invented products enjoyed and
used by people everywhere,” said Jeffrey Dollinger, Vice President of
Business Development, NIHF.

Reilly, now 76, will personally present her original recipe to the
NIHF at a special ceremony on Nov. 19. Afterward, she and today’s
Campbell’s Kitchen inventors will answer questions from local home
cooks and host a traditional Thanksgiving meal featuring the honored
Green Bean Casserole.

“When we created Green Bean Casserole, our goal was to develop an
easy recipe featuring a few simple ingredients. And most home cooks
had green beans and Cream of Mushroom soup on hand at all times,” said
Reilly, who is affectionately referred to as the “grandmother” of the
famous recipe. “Great taste and simplicity never go out of style, and
today’s home cooks still look to create great meals with ingredients
that are readily available. That’s why I think the casserole has
become a tradition for so many families over the years.”

The History of Green Bean Casserole

Originally known as Green Bean Bake when it debuted in 1955,
today’s Green Bean Casserole recipe is requested from Campbell’s
Kitchen by more than 10,000 home cooks each year, but most frequently
during the holiday season. In recent years, the holiday requests piled
so high, Campbell’s began printing the recipe on the inside of each
Cream of Mushroom soup label.

Now dishes like Green Bean Casserole are easier than ever to
prepare, since Campbell’s condensed Cream of Mushroom soup was
recently improved so that it’s creamier and easier to use for cooking.
To make the famous side dish, Campbell’s condensed Cream of Mushroom
soup is combined with a splash of soy sauce to provide a generous,
saucy coating for the green beans. The mixture is then topped with
crunchy French’s(R) Taste Toppers(TM) French fried onions for the
perfect finishing touch.

The Way Your Family Likes It

Through the years, Campbell’s Kitchen and America’s home cooks
alike have adapted the traditional Green Bean Casserole recipe by
adding or substituting different ingredients and flavors to suit their
families’ tastes.

“Green Bean Casserole has evolved into a classic because the
original recipe provides a great foundation for home cooks to tailor
and make the dish their own. In my family, my niece loves to top off
the casserole with extra French fried onions,” said Cindy Ayers, head
of Campbell’s Kitchen. “Each family has its own way of preparing Green
Bean Casserole, and it’s the personal touch that makes the dish a
lasting holiday tradition.”
