When Cold and Flu Season Hits Hard, Moms Provide Soothing Comfort with Chicken Noodle Soup

Press Releases

CAMDEN, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dec. 23, 2003–In the midst of one
of the worst cold and flu seasons in years, Mom’s advice still rings
true – eating chicken soup can help to manage the misery of cold
symptoms. In a new national survey of Moms, 94 percent agree that
Chicken Noodle soup is a warm and comforting way to increase fluid
intake. Eighty-five percent agree that they can trust Campbell’s(R)
Chicken Noodle soup to provide soothing comfort when their family
members are under the weather.

For years, mothers the world over have fed chicken soup to help
soothe family members of all ages when they have a cold or flu. In
addition to being a family favorite, a warm, steaming bowl of chicken
soup may have some physical benefits for cold sufferers and help them
to get much-needed fluids. In laboratory studies, Stephen Rennard,
M.D. and his colleagues at the University of Nebraska found that
components of chicken soup may have some potential benefits.

“Like many physicians, I recommend that both children and adults
get proper rest and nutrition and that they increase fluid intake to
stay hydrated when they are sick,” says Leah Raye Mabry, MD, RPh, a
family physician from Pleasanton, Texas and a member of the American
Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Foundation’s Nutrition
Spokesperson Team. “Increasing fluids helps to keep nasal passages
moist, prevent dehydration and soothe an irritated throat. Chicken
soup is a great choice for warmth and nourishment as well as
hydration,” adds Dr. Mabry.

Other highlights from the Moms survey echo Dr. Mabry’s
recommendations. Eighty-three percent of Moms reported that their
family members want to eat Chicken Noodle Soup when they are sick in
bed and 93 percent of Moms agree that they serve Chicken Noodle Soup
because it’s warm, soothing and nourishing.

“We know that moms choose Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup because
their kids love it, it’s convenient and it tastes great,” says Michael
Ferry, Vice President, Campbell’s Condensed soup. “Consumers tell us
there’s nothing quite like Chicken Noodle soup to warm them up when
they’re under the weather.”

Campbell’s(R) Chicken Noodle soup has been Campbell Soup Company’s
top-selling product for more than 25 years. The company ships on
average 300 million cans each year and last year it was the second
highest selling branded food item in grocery stores, according to data
from AC Nielsen.
