Pepperidge Farm Employees Clean Up Norwalk Beaches As Service To Hometown

Press Releases

More than 200 Employees Help City Become More Beautiful Community

NORWALK, C.T., May 20, 2009 – In keeping with one of its core values, “teamwork with a spirit of genuine caring,” Pepperidge Farm, Inc. today announced its fourth all-employee service day for Headquarter employees. More than 200 employees took to the shores of Norwalk (Shady Beach and Calf Pasture Beach) and Sheffield Island, painting, gardening, doing carpentry, removing graffiti and picking up litter to ready the beaches and the island for Memorial Day.

“With staffing dramatically reduced due to budget cuts to the City of Norwalk Parks and Recreation Department, there was a limited amount of clean up we could do prior to Memorial Day weekend,” said Richard Moccia, Mayor of Norwalk. “Pepperidge Farm stepped in to help where we needed it most, and we are thrilled that they are partnering with us in such a worthwhile endeavor.”

Pepperidge Farm also recently donated $2,000.00 to enable the City of Norwalk to become an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, a non-profit organization dedicated to engaging individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments. Joining Keep America Beautiful has been a goal of the city for some time, but funding was needed to realize it.

“We want to make a sustainable difference in the City of Norwalk, so our efforts today mark the beginning of a new body of support for quality of life improvements in Norwalk,” said Ruthann Walsh, Director, Corporate Citizenship. “By becoming an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Norwalk will now have access to proven methods of engaging individuals to take greater responsibility for improvements to their community environment through litter and graffiti reduction and garden development programs.”

Past Pepperidge Farm all-employee service days have included partnering with NEON (Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now) to renovate two local community centers, Nathaniel Ely and Benjamin Franklin. In addition, Pepperidge Farm has donated time and money to the community of Norwalk through various programs and volunteer opportunities such as Norwalk Nursing and Home Care, Norwalk Emergency Shelter, the Norwalk Hospital and the Norwalk Schools.

Pepperidge Farm’s contribution to the Norwalk Community has been recognized by other recent awards from NEON, the Human Services Council of Fairfield County and the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County.
