Campbell Soup Company strives to make a positive impact on the environment throughout the production process. Campbell’s largest soup plant in Napoleon, Ohio is known for its strategic location and renewable energy technologies. The plant is recognized in Food Manufacturing for its city-size water treatment plant, expansive solar field and use of a community biodigestor.
The Napoleon facility is responsible for more than two-thirds of Campbell’s beverage volume and over a third of soup volume in North America. In 2012 the plant transitioned to natural gas and currently recycles 95 percent of materials. The photovoltaic field with 23,040 panels is the largest in the United States supplying solar energy to a single private facility. Across the street from the plant, a biodigestor converts fruit-and-vegetable waste into methane to fuel two generators. As if that isn’t enough, in addition to a traditional water plant system, the operation pretreats wastewater and funnels it back to the Maumee River.
“Ohio provides the ideal arrangement for us, an excellent location and a skilled workforce,” explains Mark Cacciatore, Vice President of Manufacturing at Campbell. The latest expansion to the plant provides easy access to distribution routes and the opportunity to regionally source ingredients.
