Start with a few thousand fresh New Jersey peaches. Toss in a lot of crushed tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, cilantro and garlic. Prepare according to a specially developed recipe. Place in 16-ounce jars. Add in enthusiastic employee volunteers to pack and label.
The result? “Just Peachy” salsa – a simply scrumptious sauce that’s pleasing salsa lovers everywhere, while providing funds to help food-insecure families throughout southern New Jersey.
For the second year now, we have teamed up with local peach growers and the Food Bank of South Jersey to transform tons of undersized or slightly blemished, not-ready-for-retail fruit into a tangy treat for peach lovers.
How does it work? The Food Bank buys the peaches for pennies on the dollar. The farmers, instead of paying to haul the peaches away to landfills, earn some extra cash. We donate the manufacturing and packaging costs. Our employees volunteer to box and pack the jars for retail distribution. And, best of all, the profits – $100,000 last year – provide a sustainable source of funding for the Food Bank’s hunger relief programs.
New Jersey may be the country’s fourth-largest producer of peach crops, but we’re proud to help it become a true leader in helping our neighbors in need.
“It’s a win for local farmers, a win for the community, and a win for the Food Bank of South Jersey,” says Val Traore, the Food Bank’s CEO. “The revenue generated from this program will help fund our hunger relief programs and support the growing food insecure population in South Jersey, which is currently at more than 170,000 people, including 57,000 children.”
