Campbell is honored to learn that our Napoleon, Ohio plant won Food Processing Magazine’s 2014 Green Plant of the Year Award. Food Processing looked for a number of different qualities in the nominated plants, including energy efficiency, innovative or alternative sources of energy, water use, green building construction, innovative design and economic sustainability.
Dave Biegger, Campbell SVP – Global Supply Chain, was pleased with our recognition: “I’m very proud of Campbell’s sustainability efforts across the globe. We’ve made tremendous progress throughout our entire plant network, and our supply chain team continues to look for new ways to expand this key component of our corporate social responsibility program.”
Napoleon was an obvious choice to set the standard for our green efforts as the facility makes more than two-thirds of Campbell’s beverage volume and over a third of soup volume in North America.
To help offset the resource needs of such a high-production facility, major renewable energy projects have made big impact in the culture and community at Napoleon. In 2012, the plant transitioned to natural gas and currently recycles 95 percent of materials. Its solar field with 24,000 panels is the largest in the United States supplying solar energy to a single private facility and a new biodigestor converts fruit-and-vegetable waste into methane to fuel two generators, which also helps the local community by diverting waste from landfills. In addition to a traditional water plant system, the operation pretreats wastewater and funnels it back to the Maumee River.
We are proud to have earned the Green Plant of the Year award from Food Processing Magazine, but we won’t stop there. Our company has a heritage of environmental stewardship that is deeply rooted in our belief that we have a responsibility to nourish the health of our communities and conserve the Earth’s natural resources for future generations.
