Pepperidge Farm Named Among BEST in Baking for 2016

News

The 2016 International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE)—the Western hemisphere’s largest and most comprehensive event for the grain-based food industry—and the Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery publication have recognized Pepperidge Farm among their 2016 Becoming Environmentally Sustainable Together (B.E.S.T.) in Baking award winners.

Pepperidge Farm’s bakery in Bloomfield, Conn. features a 1-megawatt solar array – comprising 2,720 high-efficiency, ground-mounted, fixed-tilt array panels on five acres – and is one of the only solar arrays operating at a manufacturing site in the baking industry. The site also has two active fuel cells, and generates enough renewable energy to nearly cover 100 percent of its energy usage.

“As a business, we put environmental sustainability at the forefront of our planning,” said Harry Pettit, Senior Project Manager Controls and Environmental for Pepperidge Farm. “Being honored with this award is a testament to our ongoing commitment and dedication to sustainable practices. We’ve made great strides over the past few years, and will continue to build on this momentum.”

IBIE is sponsored by the American Bakers Association (ABA), the Baking Equipment Manufacturers and Allieds (BEMA) and the Retail Bakers of America (RBA). Introduced in 2010, the B.E.S.T. in Baking program recognizes IBIE exhibitors that supply equipment, packaging, ingredients, products, or services that foster energy and water conservation, decrease landfill waste, and promote healthful living and reduction in environmental impact.

“IBIE is proud to recognize those who are putting environmentally sustainable practices to use every day,” said Michael Cornelis, Chairman, IBIE. “They are an inspiration, and we’re happy to recognize their progress.”
