Funding the future of farming: Our Roots Social Justice Fund

Inclusion & Diversity

Campbell Roots is our employee resource group on a mission to spread the word about making nutritious, delicious food for all. They share and celebrate our new food innovations, as well as the farmers who grow our ingredients. Advocating for equality in agriculture and supporting small farms are two of the ways Roots is making a difference in our hometown communities.

In July, we supported four nonprofit organizations chosen by Roots members. All employee donations to the fund were matched 100% by the Campbell Soup Foundation through the month of July, helping to increase accessibility to healthy, responsibly made foods.

Meet these organizations:

Black Food Sovereignty Coalition

The Black Food Sovereignty Coalition (BFSC) brings together Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) growers, policy makers, advocates, and educators to confront the systemic barriers that make food and economic opportunities inaccessible in the Pacific Northwest—near our Pacific Foods and Kettle locations in Oregon.

“Community agriculture and education are key aspects of Roots’ mission, and the Black Food Sovereignty Coalition is working to end food insecurity and stabilize and grow the food systems at the community level in Oregon. Their work to ignite Black and Brown communities to take on an active role in the food system is an inspiration for the entire community.”

– Kate Neu, Director of Brand Marketing for Pacific Foods & Roots Marketing Co-Lead

Family Agricultural Resource Management Services

Family Agricultural Resource Management Services (F.A.R.M.S.) is a national nonprofit committed to reversing small farmland loss, reducing hunger in rural low-income communities, and assisting farmers and landowners to retain land for future generations.

“Food accessibility is so incredibly important; and supporting the future of farming is one critical step in gaining broader accessibility. It’s up to us to ensure that future generations are equipped to serve every community.”

– Cait Rambo, Associate Marketing Manager, Prego and Roots Marketing Co-Lead

National Young Farmers Coalition

Fighting for the future of agriculture, the National Young Farmers Coalition is a national network of young farmers. With the goal of helping 25,000 young people enter viable farming careers by 2022, Young Farmers focuses on tackling the most critical structural and economic barriers that prevent motivated young people from starting and continuing to farm.

“Young farmers often face many obstacles—and this organization is helping to encourage sustainable practices while also providing a network for mentorship.”

– Megan Maltenfort, Director, Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability and Campbell Roots member

First Nations Development Institute

First Nations Development Institute’s mission is to increase access to healthy food for Native American children and families by supporting Native communities and economies to build sustainable food systems.

“It is our job as humans to be responsible stewards of our land. We’re supporting First Nations Development Institute to help build healthier Native American communities where future generations can thrive.”

– Kaylee Gill, Research Chef, Research and Development Sensory & Campbell Roots Lead

As part of our Inclusion & Diversity Strategy, our social justice funds help to strengthen our ally networks—and the communities where we live and work—through financial support.

The Roots Social Justice Fund is one of eight funds we have launched over the past year. Other funds include:
